When A Fallen David Beckam Is Your Poetic Inspiration…

You just might be Britain’s next Poet Laureate!  Until then, there’s Carol Ann Duffy and this poem:

Don’t’ get all nauseous trying to “decode” the poem or think about what it all “means.”  While dry-heaving over the lame phallic imagery, we found a recent Stegner Fellow’s interpretation of the poem @ HuffPo:

Duffy, whose role as laureate gives her the difficult task of writing occasional poems that aren’t, well, horrible, seized on the cultural moment that was Beckham’s fall — and on the name of the little tendon he snapped — drawing parallels between battles on the football pitch and the Trojan War, and comparing Becks’ hard luck to the death of a certain Greek hero. Beckham, you see, tore his Achilles tendon […] Duffy’s sinewy poem, its style fitting for a soldier or a footballer”
