“Harry Potter Writes Crappy Poems Under Jewish Pen Name”

July 15, 2009

Four poems written by Danielle Radcliffe when he was 17 were published under the pen name “Jacob Gershon” in Rubbish magazine.  The poems are about infidelity, Pop Idol, affairs with prostitutes and junkie rock star Pete Doherty.

from Rubbish magazine’s blog:

Rubbish is excited to let you in on a very poetic and top secret secret we have been keeping in the muggle world. Last week a certain young actor, whose wizard roles have bewitched the public since 2001, revealed himself as none other than RUBBISH’s very own dynamic young poet, Jacob Gershon.

We are immensely proud to reveal that RUBBISH Magazine has indeed published the debut works of the talented young poet Jacob Gershon, who just so happens to be the pen name for Daniel Radcliffe.

RUBBISH celebrates creativity in all its weird and wonderful forms and this includes poetry and the written word. So when Jenny Dyson, Editor and Creative Director of RUBBISH Magazine, discovered the secret passion Dan held for poetry she selected four works for publication.

Dan’s one request was that his identity be kept secret, hence the birth of Jacob Gershon. This pen name originates from Jacob, which is Dan’s middle name and Gershon, the Jewish version of Gresham, his mother’s anglicised maiden name. The idea of publishing four works for their own merit appealed to Rubbish greatly, especially as each of Dan’s poems hold unique charm and demonstrate an exemplary grasp on metre and rhyme.

“The transitory years between childhood and adulthood hold a special type of awareness for a seventeen year old poet. The sensibility of that particular age in a writer or artist shares equal measures of knowingness and innocence unique to the teenage years. Dan’s conjure up the zeitgeist, touching on celebrity, fame and relationships in a knowing, playful way. Poetry has the ability to vividly evoke the essence of the era it is born into. Jacob Gershon’s poetry will capture this time for future generations.”

– Jenny Dyson A.K.A. Mrs Rubbish.

‘I don’t think I’d have the stamina, skill or ability to write a novel, but I’d love to write short stories and poetry, because those are my two passions. There is an art to a short story. . . I love Raymond Carver, and Chekhov  –  without making myself sound more highbrow than I am! When I don’t write in form and metre, I become unbearably self-indulgent. It’s what Robert Frost said: free verse is like playing tennis with the net down.’

-Danielle Radcliffe tells the Daily Mail

Well, the rimes are quite obvious, but it’s not terrible. The end was great, as some “I’m calmly explaining the whole thing”, as the beggining is like “I don’t give a damn”.
    I liked it… Really did.

Interesting portrayal of a wayward soul 😛

haha. I’d fancy myself a connoisseur of poetry and although that wasn’t the BEST I’ve read, it gives of a “aw, that’s so cute” kind of feel. but it does not really suit Dan, I wonder where he got the inspiration to write this. It is intriguing. The end was a bit frustrating, If this was a story, I’d want to see the second book to find out what happens! It is actually a good-read. And whichever IDIOT said that this was crappy? Please, go die, perish in a fire. *smile*

I grew up liking Dan along with a bunch of other celebrities, and sometimes I’ll hear something completely scandalous about a celebrity I idolize and just think “That jerk!” This is one of those times, but it’s happened before, like when Dan posed naked for a photoshoot.

The poem in itself is rather catchy and quite comical, but when it all boils down to the meaning of it, it leaves me questioning its author…and just going “What in God’s sake were you thinking?”

wow. that was some amazing poetry. the dumb broads that have commented before me don’t understand what it’s like to put yourself in another’s shoes and express whatever you feel. Have they ever even tried to think from another’s perspective? It’s not criticism that young Mr. Gershon needs, it’s encouragement. He’s a brilliant poet.

and i’ll tell u one thing the pain it causes is the worst feeling in the world and it leaves a very deep scar sometimes it makes u loose ur fait and trust

This poem isn’t written as himself, it was supposed what he thought Pete Doherty lived like. Why he picked him i haven’t a clue.

This is one of those time’s where I just have to stare at the screen. Why does everyone always criticise someone when they are trying something different or trying to break out of their shell. I read the poem and thought there are men out there who actually do this and get away with it. Its them you should be criticising not the person who has braught your attention to what they are doing and yes I actually liked the poem. Its different and I understand how hard it is to be an artist … Of sorts.

i agree with you. people should be so hard on other who are simply trying new things. we all do that sometimes but we don’t get treated that way becasue we aren’t famous. just becasue it’s new to us we shouldnt treat him the way people do. have you ever thought that was why he used ‘Jacob Gershon’ to keep people from finding out?

It’s not supposed to be a happy go-lucky poem, and it’s not condoning adultery at all – if anything, the opposite – The whole point is that the poem is written from the perspective of an adulterer, and it exposes all the horrid things that sort of person would think. No real adulterer would say ‘without a hint of remorse’ in true life (that would be admitting to have something to be remorseful for). The author is displaying what an abhorrent thing adultery is, you can tell by the way it’s written that the author takes a negative view of the adulterer by the way he describes him as thinking his wife a ‘stupid bitch’ and thinking he can get away with it because of his large pay cheque.

Dan is just writing as a character! It’s not totally him! He’s just expressing what he feels inside! And he’s kind of teaching a lesson here! He’s not influencing anybody to be a sexist or something. He’s just trying to show he’s perspective!Don’t be so rude but if you think you can write a better poem than this poem written by Dan that you call a shit then why don’t you write one!

For those who hate this because of the adultery theme, suck it up. He didn’t write this from his point of view. It’s from the point of view of every man that has ever done or are doing this to their family. His choice of words were meant to make it sound wrong because it IS wrong. You’re looking at this from a perspective where you think he’s PROMOTING adultery when he’s not. If he were promoting it, he would have used terms that would make the whole thing sound brilliant.

Also, he’s only being realistic, because admit it or not, there are countless men who do this kind of stuff in present time and Daniel “Jacob Gershon” Radcliffe is only helping us become aware of that, unless you’d rather remain blissfully ignorant whilst your significant other is screwing some random prostitute.

Leave the poor man alone. (Not literally poor) Just let him do what he loves. I know I do. I write all the time. Everyone has good and bad poems or stories. It doesnt matter as long as the author, in the case Dan, likes what he does.

I never in a million years would have thought Dan would actualy think of or write something like this! But, he’s human, just like the rest of us. I hate the POV of the cheating husband because it’s so cruel, but Dan really goes in depth of how another person might think, and the wording and rhymes are fantastic! I give this poem 4 out of 5 stars! It’s a pretty good poem!

Why are you criticizing him? IT’S A POEM. And let’s face it. IT IS REALLY HAPPENING IN REAL LIFE. A lot of husbands are doing it and they don’t give a damn what their family thinks or feels. HELLO! REALITY CHECK?… It wasn’t his fault that he understood that kind of situation or character at least he gives us a clear view of what was really going on even if some of us are really BLIND or HYPOCRITE to admit it. Though i don’t quite agree with some of the words but honestly they’re true.

    Way to go Dan!

It does truly symbolize scenarios that are occurring in the world today, and shows how the cheater thinks.

      • August 14, 2011 12:41 pm

this isn’t symbolism. symbolism makes you look past what is SHOWN to you to think about what it really means in different contet.
EX: the use of dogs in Renaissance paintings that focused on women symbolized the fertility of the woman and a good home life.

This was a few rhyming lines on something that happens often in today’s society. not much else is to be said about it considering its a method is a narrative basically.

I love Daniel Radcliffe too; don’t get me wrong. But just because he’s Harry Potter and we loved him in those doesn’t mean that we have to idolize everything he does just because he’s HIM. This isn’t that great, and I don’t think we should pretend otherwise.

That was just poorly written poetry. I enjoy reading poetry but this was very one demensional, predictable, and boring. Just because he used a word like “quixotic” means he’s meant for this sort of thing. He should stick with acting. He’s pretty decent at that. Much better than I would ever do. My expertise is writing.

I also grew up with the Harry Potter movies, Dan is such a wonderful person and actor; and this poem shows his other side…. his human side…. the man who feels…. and the man who loves to do this type of thin.

He is writing as a poet, not Daniel Radcliffe. Many people write poems about things like this. It’s no big deal. He is writing it as the point of view of a character. His work is a satire. He disaproves just as much as everybody else. If you look at the work itself it is quiet good. So stop being so judgmental. Just because nobody speaks of this subject too often doesn’t mean it isnt there. Its a story. Deal with it.
