Gwyneth Paltrow: Literary Compass

January 23, 2009

originally i was ashamed to admit that i subscribe to gwyneth paltrow’s email newsletter GOOP.  but then i got distracted and a little bit tired and I was like, “fuck it, gwyneth paltrow is my spirit animal, and this issue of the newsletter is all about books… and, whatever, she played Austen’s Emma and Sylvia Plath so she must read”.  imagine my giddy glee when i scanned the page and found “This week I have asked a couple of my best and most literary-minded girlfriends to share their top picks.”

so now you get to find out that: a. Gwyneth ranks Madonna among her “most literary-minded” girlfriends AND b. Madonna reads mostly contemporary fiction:

The Bad Girl by Mario Vargas Llosa

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

and while there are literally no photos of Christy Turlington reading, i found out that her literary choices are as  unbelievably smug as she is:

The Sound And The Fury, by William Faulkner

The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway

Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
