What I Really Want For Christmas

December 23, 2008

are innovative/fun ways of reading literature.

enter the moby dick twitter stream, operating since July, 2008.   the twitterer, public domain, is up to chapter 72 with over 7,000 updates/postings.  it has been estimated that nearly 10,000 “tweets” are necessary to post all 200,000+ words in Moby Dick. here’s a sample of two posts from just 5 minutes ago (note: on twitter, these clips will appear in the reverse per the posting format):

Unappalled by the massacre made upon them during the night, the sharks now freshly and more keenly allured by the before pent blood which

began to flow from the carcass–the rabid creatures swarmed round it like bees in a beehive.

we paraphrase Joseph Conrad when we insist that life is short, the art is long, and Moby Dick is a bitch to read cover to cover but it’s worth it, my child.  so maybe try this o ye of the short attention span.

take that haiku text messaging.
